Today, Amazon announced that Kindle Vella is coming to a close. Here’s the timeline:

• As of today, October 28, 2024, authors cannot post new stories but can continue to post new episodes in existing stories. Readers can no longer comment on episodes.
• As of December 4, 2024, authors will no longer be able to post new episodes, and readers won’t be able to buy any further tokens, just spend what they have left.
• As of February 2025, Vella is over (Amazon says they “will remove all remaining stories”), but readers are supposed to be able to keep access to episodes they’ve already read.

While it’s a sad day, a lot of us authors are not surprised. I’m disappointed though, because Amazon didn’t really give Vella a true chance. There were many things that could have been improved—MANY—so it’s my opinion that this was only half the effort necessary (maybe even less) to potentially make it work. Which is unfortunate because their platform is so powerful, they could have leveraged it in really incredible, worthwhile ways. Such a shame.

But anyway…

I’m happy with what I accomplished on Vella, glad I gave it a shot, and I did earn significantly more than I had previously with ebooks/paperbacks.

I tried a new genre (historical fantasy) and was thrilled to find I love it, as do my amazing readers, both existing and new.

I discovered a schedule and methods of writing that work best for me and increase my efficiency.

Now it’s time to take all of that and apply it to the long-form books I want to publish.

I’ll continue to write Prohibited Magic and publish episodes until December 4, when they’re halting that option. After that, I’ll make sure to post updates more often on socials.
